Jerold D. Kappel is a senior fundraiser and an organizational change agent with over thirty years experience in managing and advising nonprofit cultural organizations with recognized expertise in facilitating consensus building.

From 1993 to 2003, Kappel served as senior Program Director for Development, of the American Association of Museums. In addition to being responsible for the development of over $20 million in contributions and grant funds to that organization, he managed many major AAM projects, including: Partners in Tourism: Culture and Commerce™, the regional cultural tourism forums that were an initiative of the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism; the Summit of the Museums of the Americas (in Costa Rica), the cultural component of the political Summit of the Americas; the USAID-funded training program on modern management practice for Egyptian museum managers; and Everyone’s’ Welcome: Americans with Disabilities Act and Museums.

In addition to designing the facilitation for the Partners in Tourism forums and the Summit of the Museums of the Americas, he has facilitated planning for such diverse organizations as Virginians for the Arts, the Chrysler Museum, the National Safe Boating Council, the Indianapolis Living Center, the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, and other local and national organizations.

Committed to ethical fundraising, he served on the task forces that developed the AAM ethical guidelines for business and individual support of museums, was the cultural sector liaison to the national Nonprofit Accountability Committee, and has served on ethics committees for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

His leadership in the area of cultural tourism led to his service as a member of the board of the Travel Industry Association of America’s National Council of Attractions, and as a judge for the TIA Odyssey Awards. He is a frequent speaker at tourism industry meetings and served on the guest faculty for the Alliance for National Heritage Areas Institute. He has twice led seminars on management and planning for the cultural organizations of the nation of Georgia, facilitating the development of an association of cultural leadership during his last visit in May 2004.

As external affairs officer, he created or restructured the development and external affairs functions at the Milwaukee Public Museum, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre. He is a former professional actor, director and Equity-bonded producer. Mr. Kappel is a frequent presenter on fund raising, sponsorship, financial management, strategic board development and nonprofit ethics at regional and national nonprofit conferences.

He served as interim president and CEO of the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) for which he previously served as Chair of the Board.
