The Institute of Internal Auditors (The IIA)
took the lead in producing six
national cyber security conferences in 2000. Working in conjunction with
the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office, The IIA brought the case
for increased information technology security to top-level corporate
managers, boards of directors, internal and external auditors, and audit
committees.
The IIA retained Plexus Consulting Group to both organize the six conferences and provide media relations services for the events. Initial efforts focused on the Washington, DC conference, which was held at the White House on April 18. A standing room only crowd heard the Secretaries of Commerce and Treasury, the President's Chief of Staff, and officials of companies such as General Motors, BellSouth, Microsoft, etc., discuss ways in which government and industry can work together to lessen cyber security risks. Through the efforts of Plexus' communications team, the White House conference was covered live by three cable television networks (including C-SPAN), a radio network, three of the leading wire services (Reuters, Bloomberg, Newsbytes), and numerous specialty magazines, newsletters, and online publications. Additional conferences in this series were held between May-September 2000 in five major cities*. Working in cooperation with local sponsors, Plexus placed stories with television and radio stations/networks, newspapers, business/technical publications, and other media. *Dallas (May 15), Atlanta (June 27), Chicago (July 11), San Francisco (August 22), and New York (September 19). |
